About the Organizers

Lisa Nye  & Alicia Cantwell
Coordinators, Best Practices in School-Based OT Conference

We are occupational therapists who met in 2001 while working in school-based therapy.  By 2011, Lisa had moved across country, but we kept in touch to discuss the rewards and challenges of providing therapy in schools and offer each other strategies and support.  We were interested in networking with other school-based OTs and searched for a conference that was 100% dedicated to topics related to school-based therapy, but we were unable to find one.  Being young and foolish, we decided to plan one ourselves.  Our first conference was held in 2012, and the number of attendees has grown exponentially since then, with OTs joining us from as far away as Canada and Germany!

It has been our mission to coordinate an affordable annual event that offers informative presentations, networking opportunities, and exposure to the latest materials (e.g. assessment tools, treatment tools, skill development programs, etc.) THAT ARE SPECIFIC TO SCHOOL-BASED THERAPY, thereby enabling attendees to exercise "Best Practice".  We plan the conference in our free time ...truly a "labor of love"... because we believe it is an important source of information and emotional support for our colleagues and ourselves.  We are grateful for every presenter, vendor, volunteer, and attendee who has joined us over the years and those who will join us in the future.  It would not be successful without you!

Lisa Nye MA, OTR/L
Lisa received her Master's of Art degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Southern California.  She has worked full-time as a school-based OT since 2001, and she currently works in schools in the metro Atlanta area.  Besides her job as a full-time school district OT and conference planner, Lisa owns a private practice specializing in pediatrics.  When she is not working, Lisa enjoys spending time with her three young children, her husband, and her dog.

Alicia Cantwell MOTR/L
Alicia received her Master's of Occupational Therapy from the University of Puget Sound.  She has worked full-time as a school-based OT for the better part of the last 18 years, and she currently works for Union County Public Schools in North Carolina.  In addition to her full time school district job and conference planning, Alicia has been an independent contractor working in Early Intervention, Adult Home Health, and Acute Care throughout her career.  Alicia has an adult son (about whom she will be happy to talk your ear off!) and enjoys spending time with her family and watching movies in her free time.
